Why a weekend at the Dinokeng Game Reserve is worth the drive

Situated just over an hour’s drive from OR Tambo International Airport, the Dinokeng Game Reserve is one of many reasons to visit Gauteng. It also promises you the game-viewing experience of a lifetime.

It'll be worth your while to make the drive to the reserve, which boasts the famous Big Five: lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, and buffalo. While enjoying a game drive or self-drive tour of the reserve you are also likely to spot resident cheetah and brown hyena. A far cry from seeing these animals in a zoo, at the Dinokeng Game Reserve you get to experience African wildlife in its natural habitat – without having to travel too far from the city.

While at the reserve you can enjoy a range of activities, most of which can be organised through the reserve’s booking service. Although you can choose to enjoy the activities in any order that appeals to you and your fellow travellers, it may be best to start with a game drive so that if you don’t see all the wildlife you’d like to see the first time, you can take another drive before the end of your trip.

You can also enjoy a cultural tour, a bush walk, fishing and some delicious food at one of the many resturants in the reserve. Accommodation in the reserve varies so you can choose according to your style from: caravanning, lodges, self-catering chalets, backpackers and guest houses. Access a detailed list of accommodation available via the Dinokeng Game Reserve website.

For the ecologist, the reserve details information including topography, climate, vegetation and soils. There is also a downloadable PDF on elephant behaviour which, as explained on the website, is “to help [you] understand our elephants in their space.”

Another attraction at the reserve is its natural habitat. Just being out in the bush where you can enjoy fresh air and some amazing vistas is a highlight of a trip here.

The reserve is also committed to the upliftment of the local community and details its work on its website. This means that while you’re enjoying your time in the reserve, you can rest assured that the local community is benefitting too.

There is so much to see and experience in this reserve and it is truly worth the drive. You probably won’t even be aware of the distance when you are driving back because you’ll have so many experiences to talk about.
