Johannesburg advocate Kameshni Pillay launched the Shakti Concept Store & Global Desi in Randburg on 2 March 2012 to forge a closer fashion relationship between India and South Africa.

The concept store will import authentic, trendy, Indian garments, handbags and trinkets of high quality but at an affordable price.
Global Desi, by Anita Dongre, is a leading Indian brand inspired by traditional and cultural Indian art. The Global Desi collections are a rich blend of ethnicity and contemporary style with many prints, patterns and colours.
“It [Shakti Concept Store] is an attempt to bring to South Africa what is new, fresh and trendy in India,” says Kameshni Pillay.
“South African buyers are very particular about authenticity and affordability. Through Shakti and Global Desi we hope to enable buyers to experience the best of India, and offer a truly memorable shopping experience.”
Pillay was inspired to open the shop after her travels to India and says she hopes to build the popularity of the Shakti brand across South Africa so that it is associated with trendy, high quality and affordable Indian garments and crafts. Pillay also wants to open Global Desi branches around the country and have them feature in major chain stores.
“On our many travels to India, we have always been fascinated by the depth of Indian culture, which is multi-faceted to say the least, mostly due to its variety of people, religions and languages,” she adds.
“We have always found it interesting that Indian culture, and fashion in particular, is so easily transplanted into our lives as ordinary South Africans. We, however, like to believe that the appeal of authentic and trendy Indian wear goes beyond this. In South Africa, a country that is itself an amalgam of diverse cultures, the appeal of Indian values, art and fashion is irresistible.”
Shakti Concept Store and Global Desi is at Shop 25 HoneyCrest Shopping Centre, Randpark Ridge.
