The Harties Cableway – an experience you'll want to repeat

Looking for something different to do this weekend?

The Harties Cableway, revamped and ready to impress, recently reopened to the public. Africa's longest mono-cableway makes for a fun family outing you'll want to repeat.

Hartbeespoort is known as the “playground of Gauteng”, and this addition to the line-up things to do in the area is a real gem.

The old cableway, built in 1973, was shut down in 2005 when it fell into disrepair. Now under new ownership, it has been brought back to life. The new cable cars are shiny, safe, cosy and seat up to six people each.

The ride up is thrilling, and the views of the Hartbeespoort Dam and its surrounds are spectacular. There is no shortage of great photo opportunities.

Once you reach the top, there's lots to do: tuck into tasty pizzas, enjoy a restful picnic, chill out at the Lookout Bar, or take a stroll around the mountain on the Dassie Loop walkway, which boasts educational placards detailing points of interest in the area.

There is a playground area for the kids, and lots of green grass to stretch out on – sure to be a hit in summer. The cableway also boasts two charming curio shops – one at the top and one at the bottom – as well as an adventure centre, which is a fantastic portal to other fun activities and outings in the Harties area.

You can also host a special event or conference there. Anniversary coming up? You can book your own private observation point – a wonderful romantic gesture to enjoy with that special someone.
