Shortly after the Lilizela Tourism Awards media launch in our nation’s capital on 14 August, we set off to Jozi for the official media launch of its oldest and most extravagant horse race, the #GautengSummerCup. The event was hosted at the exquisite rooftop of Rockets Lifestyle in Bryanston. The guests and media were welcomed to vibrant summer colours, an assortment of drinks, a tapas style menu and live in-house DJs. As Jozi slowly creeps out of its winter slumber, we definitely got a taste of summer!
Guests were welcomed by the lovely celeb MC, Thembi Seete, who added to the vibe with her fab pink outfit and bubbly persona.
Rob Scott, CEO of Sports Betting and Media, Phumelela, spoke to guests and media about their vision for the brand – how they took a bold move three years ago to turn this now 122 year old race into #thepeoplesrace. Scott mentioned 3 key factors behind their strategy: The first factor is giving back to the community through its #SocialPioneers initiative, secondly to revolutionise the sport by inspiring and instilling a culture of adoration of horsemen and their thoroughbreds to increase event attendance. The third factor was to create an experience for everyone, something not offered by any other horseracing event in South Africa.
The Gauteng Summer Cup will be an event that the whole family can attend, including a theme park for the kids, a variety of foods, a one-of-a-kind silent disco experience, lots of entertainment and a halftime performance by South Africa's favourite afro-fusion band, Freshlyground.
The guests and media where treated to a live performance by Basel Grey, including his original featured mix On our knees with Mark Stent, setting the right mood with the perfect backdrop.
The annual Gauteng Summer Cup will take place at Turffontein Racecourse, Johannesburg, on 30 November 2019. Will you be there? We certainly will!
