The Mamelodi Heritage Experience is an entrepreneurial initiative based in Gauteng neighbourhood of Mamelodi, Tshwane. The project seeks to share with domestic and international travellers the rich history of one of Gauteng’s oldest neighbourhoods in a way that is both green and fun.

Through guided bicycle tours of Mamelodi – during which visitors stop at local heritage sites and learn about the history and origin of the area – the Mamelodi Heritage Experience aims to raise the profile of Mamelodi and make it one of the major destinations in tourism South Africa.

In essence, the project – via bespoke tour packages – provides a unique, eco-tourist heritage experience for travellers to Tshwane and Mamelodi. It customises various routes for different tour groups, based on the time visitors have available.

Tour groups are also given the opportunity to sample the diverse culinary penchants of the people of Mamelodi, which will deepen their intimate experience of the community. Groups visit an array of foodie establishments on the tour, including homes, taverns and local eateries.

Sites visited on the tour include Stanza Bopape Community Centre, Solomon Mahlangu Square, FF Ribeiro, Mamelodi rondavels, Eerste Fabriek, the museum, the mountain and the village.

The Mamelodi Heritage Experience also offers chauffeured tours of the township, extreme cycling activities, team-building exercises, tours of Tshwane nightspots and educational heritage programmes for schoolchildren.

As part of its social entrepreneurship, the Mamelodi Heritage Experience has also established a cycling club, the Urban Riders.

The club is currently developing a local membership base and aims to positively change the lifestyle of people living Mamelodi by involving them in activities that are fun, healthy and socially engaging.
