Jozi Free Walking Tours

One of the best ways to explore the buzzing Joburg city centre is on foot – with a free walking tour of some of the City of Gold's most fascinating sights.

For an authentic taste of this vibey African city, join Sethu and her Jozi Free Walking Tours team for a leisurely but insightful stroll through the heart of Jozi. Along the way, you'll witness incredible public artworks and architecture while soaking up some history.

Meet at City Perk Café, located at 70 Fox Street in Marshalltown – look out for the guide with the maroon umbrella.

From there, you'll walk through the pedestrianised zone housing the city's historic mining district. This open-air "living museum" evokes the long-ago heyday of Jozi's gold rush with exhibits such as sculptures and mining equipment, while still housing some of the world's largest mining companies.

Pass the Magistrate's Court and you'll be stopped in your tracks by the sight of Chancellor House with its iconic "shadow boxer" sculpture of Nelson Mandela, who, with his good friend Oliver Tambo, opened South Africa's first black law firm there in 1952.

From there, you'll continue your sightseeing odyssey through central Joburg, where you'll pass colourful stalls selling traditional clothing and accessories. It's a thrilling feast for the senses, as you immerse yourself in all things Jozi - then and now.

The guides of Jozi Free Walking Tours may volunteer their services on a tips-only basis, but they're true professionals at welcoming visitors and locals alike. Their friendly manner and informative tours will make you feel right at home in the exciting cosmopolitan melting pot that's Johannesburg.

Free walking tours are offered twice daily, Mondays to Saturdays, at 10.30am and 1pm. The duration of each tour is about one hour and 45 minutes. Booking is not essential. Group and customised tours are available on request. The guides advise you not to bring bags or valuables along on the walking tour.
