Shisa nyama is a term used in South Africa to refer to an informal braai located near a butchery. In Zulu, the phrase quite literally means, “Burn the meat” and locals will visit a shisa nyama to enjoy freshly spiced meat that has been cooked right then and there. Joe’s Butchery, located on 11th avenue in the township of Alexandra in Johannesburg is one of the best known shisa nyama spots in the city.
Joe’s is a veritable institution in Alexandra (or Alex as the locals call it) and has been serving satisfied customers for almost 20 years. Although it closes at 21:00 out of respect for the neighbours, Sundays at Joe’s are filled with braai smoke, great house music and a lively atmosphere.
Joe’s Butchery is the kind of place where local businessmen and football players hangout and it is not uncommon to see expensive cars parked out front belonging to the local celebrities who like to return to the township for Sunday lunch. The service is friendly and with a smile and you couldn’t eat something more authentically South African than Joe’s braaied boerwors with pap and spicy chakalaka. Since the day it opened Joe’s has sought to create an atmosphere where people from different backgrounds can come together and enjoy themselves, and on any given Sunday you’ll find they have most certainly succeeded.
