Café Picobella Trattoria is an authentic Italian restaurant in Johannesburg’s popular student suburb of Melville. This quirky and friendly neighbourhood has a number of well-preserved historic buildings and its pavements are lined with an eclectic selection of cafes and restaurants that lend the suburb a lively atmosphere, particularly in the evenings.
One of the prettiest restaurants in the area, Café Picobella Trattoria occupies two 100 year old semi-detached houses, complete with original steel pressed ceilings and wooden floors, that have been converted into an intimate restaurant with a series of interlinked dining rooms connected by faux-stone archways. There is also an outdoor terrace, perfect for summer evenings or lunches in the sun and in the winter the awnings come down and heaters are set up so you can enjoy the evening in comfort.
A family-run restaurant, the trattoria maintains a casual air and you can come here to enjoy a three course meal or just relax with an Italian coffee while you read your newspaper at the fashionable fifties-style bar area.
The menu focuses on Italian country style cuisine. For starters you can expect dishes like the vegetarian favourite roasted butternut and gorgonzola pot, consisting of butternut roasted with sage, gorgonzola and black mushroom served in a puff pastry pot.
Mains include classic Italian specialities like spaghetti carbonara and pork a la Milanese, and of course no trattoria would be complete without a pizza oven. Picobella’s thin-crust pizzas are baked in a beautiful mosaic-tiled, wood-fired pizza oven and there is a wide range of interesting topping combinations.
To finish off the meal desserts such as the homemade tiramisu or polenta orange cake are highly recommended.
Picobella is always busy – a testament to their consistently excellent food, warm atmosphere and good service.
