Opened in late 2014 the Newtown Junction mall is a major part of the revival of the historic Newtown area of downtown Johannesburg and is just one element of a wider redevelopment project in the area which also includes a new hotel, offices and other retail areas. The mall centres on an open square behind the landmark Museum Africa building, which is lined with cafes and restaurants including the lively cafe-bar News Cafe.
Inside the mall itself you can find a plethora of popular High Street stores including Mr Price, Total Sports and Truworths as well an Edgars department store, supermarkets, a gym, a large fast food court and a Ster-Kinekor cinema. The open-air square is particularly lively on Sunday afternoons when there are free jazz concerts.
When the mall was constructed careful attention was paid to incorporate the area’s remaining historic buildings into the design and remnants of early 20th Century Johannesburg can still be seen in many of the surrounding heritage structures such as the Kippies club and the Market Theatre, as well as in the iron work surrounding many of the stores on the mall’s central square.
