Located in the heart of Johannesburg’s trendy downtown district of Maboneng, this Argentine steakhouse is among the city’s most atmospheric, combining authentic Argentine cuisine with an artistic, vintage-chic aesthetic. The location is a whole historical warehouse building on Maboneng’s main street, Fox Street, which has been cleverly reconfigured into a large, yet warm and inviting space.
One-third of the restaurant houses an open kitchen where the meats are cooked over a traditional wood-fired parrilla, while the rest of the space is filled with an eclectic mix of long tables, grand candelabras, colourful lamps and antique furniture. The walls still carry the faded traces of decades-old industrial signage.
The Argentine team that runs the restaurant prides itself on serving authentic cuisine in a friendly and easygoing atmosphere. Highlights on the menu include a delicious home-made pork belly chorizo served with a magnificent chimichurri sauce, which again has been made on-site according to time-honoured recipes.
For mains the steaks are, of course, a must and for dessert anything served with the irresistible sticky and sweet dulce de leche is difficult to resist. There’s an excellent selection of South African and Argentinean wines and the owners encourage guests to stay on after dinner to enjoy the Bohemian ambience over more drinks. A great choice for an upmarket evening out in this most artistic neighbourhood.
Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 11pm. Closed on Mondays.
