The Factory on Grant

Set over three floors around a central courtyard on Norwood’s suburban main street, Grant Avenue, the Factory on Grant see itself as an "anti-mall" with small shops promoting locally made artisanal goods. Its friendly atmosphere and cute collection of shops have been credited with helping cement this pretty suburb’s place on the list of Joburg’s up-and-coming cool neighbourhoods.

For gift shopping visit the Merkati gifts store selling antiques and quirky vintage-chic gifts created from salvaged materials, and the Smelt Glassblowing studio, whose beautiful glass decor items are blown on-site. Other artistic residents include the Bayliss Gallery and m.e.s.a.w (My Epic South African Way), a silk-screen printing studio selling brightly patterned cushions, throws and T-shirts inspired by South African nature and architecture.

For food and drinks there is the Vovo Telo bakery that spills out over the central courtyard, offering delicious fresh breads and pastries, light lunches and coffee. Pet-friendly and popular with families, it’s a relaxed space to while away the lunchtime hours. Meanwhile, on the rooftop – reached via a steep steel staircase – is the small Crafters Bar, a relaxed spot for sundowners with expansive views over the trees of the suburb.

Open daily 7am to 10pm
