The Big Mouth is a slick, upmarket sushi and seafood restaurant that looks out over Nelson Mandela Square in the heart of Sandton, one of Johannesburg’s major business districts. Its central location in Sandton makes it a popular destination for business travellers and tourists like.
The extensive menu of this art deco-inspired eatery includes many sushi and sashimi favourites plus plenty of unusual and delicious signature sushi combinations.
For those who prefer their food cooked, look to the “Pots” on the menu, which include a choice of mixed seafood cooked with roasted garlic and fresh cream; an oxtail pot with red wine and Parmesan mash; and BBQ maple-glazed pork ribs.
The sides menu is a real crowd-pleaser with its wide array of items, including grilled corn, cauliflower gratin and baked sweet potato. A selection of small plates includes chicken wings, crispy squid, chicken livers and nachos.
For dessert try the churros, crisply baked pastry with a butterscotch and milk chocolate dip, or the ice-cream sandwich. The cocktail menu includes classics like the Whiskey Sour and Cosmopolitan, and twisty combinations including the Lichi It To Me, a gin, litchi and lime mix. If sushi is your style then order sake to go with it.
The tables, which look out directly onto the square, are the most popular place to see and be seen. Alternatively, if you are looking for a quick lunch while exploring the many shops of the Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square malls, grab a seat at the marble bar counter, which wraps around the sushi station.
