Johannesburg may not have a lake shore or a coastline, but right in the heart of the city centre you can still find a beach – albeit a man-made one perched on a rooftop overlooking one of the most hip and happening corners of the student district, Braamfontein.
The Beach was first opened in 2012 as a pop-up collaboration between beer brand Grolsch and local Braamfontein property developer Adam Levy and has since become a permanent fixture in this downtown neighbourhood known for its busy nightlife and colourful street fashion.
After paying your entrance fee and climbing the staircase to the rooftop, you are treated to soft bright white sand and dozens of deckchairs to kick back in while you admire the views of the surrounding street life and Johannesburg’s iconic Nelson Mandela Bridge.
Saturday afternoons are the most popular time to hang out at The Beach when locals drop by for cocktails and house DJ sets after visiting the trendy Neighbourgoods market on the opposite side of the street. Ice-cold cocktails served in hefty jam jars are the order of the day at this beach bar; or you can try the house speciality, Moscow Mule, or a classic G&T with a twist for the ultimate refreshment.
Hours: Saturday and Sunday noon to 7pm; also open from 5pm on the first Thursday of every month
