If you’re a craft-beer aficionado then a visit to this spectacular downtown craft brewery in Johannesburg’s 1 Fox Precinct is a must. The 1 Fox Precinct stretches across two city blocks in the historic Ferreirasdorp district of the city, filled with century-old warehouses that have been cleverly converted into bars, markets, function venues, artists' studios and dining destinations.
The Mad Giant brewery shed is very easy to find with a huge retro-style sign on its roof and a spacious beer garden that stretches around the building. Inside the space has been given a fun makeover with quirky light fittings and unusual Meccano-inspired tables and chairs.
Striding behind the bar is a giant metallic Mad Giant sculpture, and there’s also a small shop selling Mad Giant-branded glassware and bottles of beer. The brewery also shares space with the exciting Urbanologi restaurant known for its unique Asian-inspired gourmet tapas.
The brewery currently produces four beers: the Guzzler, a dry hopped Pilsner that’s perfect on summer days; the Killer Hop APA, a most memorable brew with notes of light honey, biscuit and caramel; the True Grit Amber Ale; and a fresh and fruity Weiss beer, Electric Light.
