This delicatessen and cafe in the charming Johannesburg suburb of Linden specialises in selling gourmet cheeses from across South Africa.
Cheese Gourmet sells over 140 different types of cheeses from 45 South African farms, as well as home-made pickles, jams, preserves, cured meats, biscuits, olives, coffee and other deli items made by local producers.
The owners of Cheese Gourmet, Jo and Brian Dick, are champions of Slow Food (a movement that started in Italy and encourages shoppers to buy and eat locally made products that are produced using historic methods) and everything that is stocked in the shop can most certainly be described as artisanal.
Cheese Gourmet is more than just a shop – there is also the adjoining Cheese Café, which serves breakfast and lunch.
As is to be expected, cheese features heavily on the menu. Delicious cheesy dishes include goat's cheese quiche and Welsh rarebit, and for the ultimate cheese experience treat yourself to one of the massive cheese platters that come with a selection of some of the shop's finest cheese selection, served with bread, pickles and home-made chilli jam.
