South Africa’s first roaster of certified fair-trade coffee, Bean There was founded in Johannesburg in 2005 and has since grown to be one of the most popular coffee brands in the city.
Bean There sources all of its single origin unblended coffee from Rwanda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya, trading directly with coffee farmers to ensure that they and their community directly benefit from the coffee trade. Beans are then roasted at one of two coffee roasteries in Johannesburg.
The original roastery and coffee shop can be found at 44 Stanley, a converted 1930s industrial complex filled with courtyard cafes, design shops and fashion boutiques. Paying homage to its formerly industrial location, the decor is minimalist and chic, a white cube brightened up with lots of colourful lamp shades and bulky hessian sacks of beans that line the walls.
The smell of freshly roasted beans emanating from the giant roasting machines is heavenly. Free Wi-Fi and plenty of space make this an ideal spot to catch up on some work on your laptop while enjoying an expert brew. There is also a second, smaller roastery in Braamfontein with the same distinct interiors and aroma and a handful of tables on the street, an ideal spot to grab a coffee on the go.
