ABSA gallery is located at the Johannesburg headquarters of one of South Africa’s major banks, ABSA, in the middle of the Johannesburg central business district. The bank also spearheads Barclays L’Atelier, one of Africa’s most prestigious art competitions. The gallery hosts temporary exhibitions, and each year displays works by the competition finalists.
Located in ABSA Towers North, part of a sprawling banking complex of impressive skyscrapers, the open-air space around the gallery was designed with art in mind and houses many permanent works by leading South African artists. In particular look out for the 11metre-tall wire sculpture by Walter Oltmann depicting replicas of carved African chairs, and weighing half a tonne.
Monday to Friday: 08:30 – 16:00, closed weekends and public holidays.
