Gauteng is the economic dynamo of South Africa, generating an estimated third of the country’s gross domestic product. The financial, mining and manufacturing industries are major players in the economy, but Gauteng is also attractive to other sectors, which realise the benefits of operating in a province with a stable economy and sound social development strategy. Most visitors to Gauteng get around by vehicle. The province has a well-developed road network, with several arterial routes leading into the main centres of Johannesburg and Pretoria:

• The N1 is a north/south freeway that bisects Gauteng, linking Johannesburg and Pretoria.
• The N3 runs from Sandton through the south-east parts of the province.
• The N4 runs east/west through Pretoria.
• The N12 runs east/west through Johannesburg.

Much of the province’s heritage has been preserved, and visitors can relive the past and gain insight into significant events, periods and personalities by exploring the many historical attractions on show.
