Markets & Malls Attractions
Overview
Gauteng is the smallest and richest province in South Africa. Its economy is even bigger than that of some African countries. Nothing demonstrates Gauteng’s status as the country’s economic engine room than the number of malls scattered around the province. Some of South Africa’s most impressive malls are found in Gauteng, whose residents have an insatiable desire for shopping. Johannesburg has the highest concentration and swankiest malls in the province. Virtually every region in Gauteng has its own malls with Johannesburg’s northern suburbs having the most.
Sandton City, Rosebank Mall and Melrose Arch in Johannesburg, and Pretoria’s Menlyn Park Mall stand out as the province’s most palatial malls, which offer visitors an unforgettable shopping and dining experience. This is in addition to other malls which house some top notch boutiques and upscale brand names as well as several eateries to satisfy people’s shopping and dining appetite. Gauteng residents just love to shop and dine out, and the sheer number of malls provides them with a shopping splendour and restaurants to dine at everyday of the week. The malls are also increasingly becoming ideal meeting and socialising spots away from the office buzz.
Sandton City even boasts three upmarket hotels, the Intercontinental Hotel, Sandton Sun and the Michael Angelo Hotel, which cater mainly for guests and dignitaries to numerous international conferences held at the nearby Sandton Convention Centre. Rosebank Mall stimulates shopping experience with its renowned African Craft Market and Rooftop Market where visitors can purchase indigenous curios from a collection of African artefacts. Within a five kilometre radius from Rosebank Mall is the Killarney Mall. There are also the Fourways, Cresta, and Northgate Malls, which service the suburbs of Northcliff, Randburg, Fourways, North Riding and the sprawling Cosmo City.
To the east of Johannesburg are the Eastgate Mall and East Rand Mall close to OR Tambo International Airport. Next to the East Rand Mall is the East Rand Market, which sells African curios, beads and hand-weaved carpets and baskets. Deeper into the East Rand are the Lakeside Mall in Benoni and the Van Riebeeck Mall in Edenvale.
In the south of Johannesburg are the High Glen and Southgate Malls. One of the busiest malls in Gauteng is the Maponya Mall in the heart of Soweto. Maponya Mall has saved a lot of Sowetans from travelling long distances to do their shopping. It has also added a different dimension to the township’s entertainment scene with its upmarket dining and drinking places. Clearwater Mall and Westgate Mall serve residents in Gauteng’s West Rand.
If you are in Pretoria, you can visit the Brooklyn Mall, Menlyn Park Mall, Hatfield Mall, Atteridgeville Mall and Lynnridge Mall. These malls offer you a leisurely shopping experience in the country’s capital. Gauteng’s malls are more than just shopping, but offer great entertainment for the whole family. If shopping and eating out are not your passion, you can always enjoy your leisure time by catching the latest blockbuster movies at the country’s top cinemas.
