Getting to Gauteng
OR Tambo International Airport
OR Tambo International Airport is a hot and happening gateway to Gauteng province and the rest of South Africa. Not only has the airport just completed major renovations and refurbishment, but more long-haul flights are landing here than ever before. In peak travel periods there are five daily flights from London, daily flights from France on the A380 airbus and twice weekly Lufthansa arrivals. You can catch a non-stop flight from all around the globe, including Washington, Atlanta, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Madrid, Lisbon, Dakar, Lagos, Accra, Cairo, Jeddah, Addis Ababa, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne.
Sailing to Cape Town or Durban is another way of getting to South Africa. A number of cruise ships dock in Cape Town Harbour. The RMS St Helena, an original mail ship, leaves from South Hampton and, after stopping at Cape Town, chugs on to St Helena. From the coast, getting to Gauteng is easy – you can fly, take a train or travel by road.
Bold travellers with more time also reach Gauteng overland, through Africa. Tour operators offer places on specially kitted out trucks that venture off the beaten track and trips vary in length from a week to close to a year. Independent travellers have also driven through Africa after careful research and planning. By all accounts, this is the journey of a lifetime – but not for the faint hearted.
The most speedy and convenient way to reach Gauteng from international lands is by air. A travel agent can be tasked with making the necessary arrangements and shopping around for good rates.
