If fresh air is on the agenda, Gauteng has a lot to offer cyclists. Cycling is an exhilarating way to explore a beautiful province – whether you’re navigating leafy Johannesburg, or planning an adventure through the Magaliesberg.
Johannesburg is home to a large cycling community. The Toyota MTN Cycle Park in Bryanston offers cyclists of all ages and experience levels a variety of trails and activities to enjoy. The secure, man-made trails are carefully maintained and enclosed to ensure a safe and relaxing cycling experience. The park adheres to International Mountain Bike Association and African Mountain Bike Association standards, and is a perfect escape from its urban surroundings.

For a unique experience and fresh perspective, Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers & Cycle Tours offers guided cycle tours through Soweto, situated on the outskirts of Johannesburg and synonymous with the struggle against apartheid. The tours explore the vibrant streets of Soweto and include stops at historical landmarks, including the house of Bishop Tutu and the Hector Pieterson Museum.
This is a wonderful opportunity to explore a culturally diverse and historical part of Gauteng. Overnight accommodation is also on offer, as is the chance to soak up the atmosphere in a local shebeen (pub) and enjoy a drink with friends and locals.
Themba Day Tours & Safaris also offers guided cycle tours through Soweto if you’re keen to sightsee the eco-friendly way.
If you’re looking to escape the city, there are lots of opportunities to enjoy amazing scenery and adventures in the Magaliesberg. The Magaliesberg mountain range extends from the north of Gauteng, beyond Pretoria, into the North West Province and is known for its majestic scenery. Escape Cycle Tours offers a weekend break, coined the “Magaliesberg Week-ender”, which includes a morning cycles, lodging and home-cooked meals.
Arrive Alive South Africa stresses the importance of dressing for visibility, especially if you’re cycling through Johannesburg. Wearing reflective gear is a must, and be sure to check the weather forecast to avoid those famous Gauteng thundershowers. Travelling in groups is recommended, as is avoiding night rides, unless you are cycling on a protected trail.
