What’s happening in Gauteng this weekend – 27 to 29 January, 2012

It’s the last weekend of January and we’ve lined up some exciting events, among them the celebration of the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Dragon.

Chinese New Year in Joburg

Celebrate the Chinese New Year at Brightwater Commons
The Brightwater Commons is giving you another reason to party at its Chinese New Year festival. Come celebrate the Year of the Dragon with the internationally renowned headline act, the China National Acrobatics Troupe, which incorporates music, dance, opera and Kung Fu into their acrobatics.
 
The opening ceremony will include a colourful display of dragon and lion dancing, with a variety of traditional dancers and singers. The China National Acrobatics Troupe was established 50 years ago and has performed in more than 80 countries around the world. Bring your own picnic or try the Chinese delicacies while you make yourself comfortable on the grass and enjoy the show.

JoziFest pre-party

This Friday, Town Hall is hosting a pre-party to get you in the mood for JoziFest. The line-up features many amazing artists including 7th Son, Liver and Destrukto. JoziFest is happening in February and will feature 11 international acts and more than 40 of South Africa’s renowned performers. There will also be a carnival, food market and an exhibition of art, design, video and photography.

Award-winning South African singer-songwriter and guitarist, Arno Carstens, is performing live at Tanz Café. Carstens is the former lead singer of the popular band, The Springbok Nude Girls, and has released seven studio albums with 18 top 10 singles in his solo career. He has won five South African Music Awards.

Those Indian Guys 2 are back at the Globe Theatre at Gold Reef City Casino  for another side-splitting show. Kaseran and Sans deliver 75 minutes of non-stop laughter with their clever, witty and cheeky comedy sketches that explore Indian identity and culture.

International Mozart festival

The fourth Johannesburg International Mozart Festival is back again to celebrate the anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s birthday. The festival, originally organised in 2006, has become a highly successful and well-loved annual classic music event. This year the theme is Quasi Improvisando and promises interesting contributions from musicians of diverse backgrounds. The Melodi Music project – an important music workshop – will run again this year but will form an intercultural education exchange scheme with a similar group of students from Germany.
