Public lectures at the Origins Centre

Every Tuesday night the Origins Centre museum at the University of Witwatersrand hosts public lectures on a variety of topics including evolution, emigration, rural sustainability, the Anglo Zulu war, the art of bead making, ancient stone walls etc.

The Origins Centre is the world’s only museum dedicated to exploring and celebrating the history of modern humankind.

The lectures are presented by leading academics from fields including archaeology, anthropology, paleoanthropology, history, geology and politics.

Lectures are delivered in a relaxed atmosphere to allow absolute participation between the guest and audience members.

Previous speakers have included: ANC chief Dr Mathole Motshekga, playwright, director and actor John Kani, head of the School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies at Wits University Prof Karim Sadr and many more.

The most recent talk at the Centre tackled the origins of stone walls in South Africa. Through a number of slides, the speaker showed the different structures found in South Africa and where they originate from.

An entry fee of R65 per adult, R35 for high school learners, R25 for children under 12 and R45 for the elderly is applicable to those wishing to attendant these lectures.

The Origins Centre is situated at the University of Witwatersrand in Braamfontein. The Centre is open from 09:00 to 17:00 from Sunday to Monday.
