Gauteng stand stuns Indaba visitors and wins a Platinum award

The Gauteng Tourism Authority wowed Indaba attendees with its amazing stand design this year. A tall passage of cardboard rolls supports a series of new-age chandeliers in a look that has inspired many to linger and enjoy its carefully designed details.

The gorgeous design and green thinking behind the stand won Gauteng Tourism a Platinum award at the Indaba stand awards in the destination marketing category. Platinum is the apex award – there is none higher or more coveted.

The materials used were specially selected by visionary exhibition stand designer Nicholas de Klerk. This talented award-winning designer was briefed to design a “stand” after successfully winning the tender with his conceptual thinking and proven ability to innovate in this field. He has 30 years of expertise in the design of custom-built exhibition stands, showrooms, retail and office interiors, hospitality suites and theatre sets, and his memorable stands at 2011's COP 17 event held in Durban continue to be a talking point.

The inspiration for his creation was totally “green” and the reference to shweshwe fabric and tusks is clearly evident, as is the raw industrial technology of Joburg in this sustainable exhibition stand design. The design and finish of the stand is polished and professional. It was built from sustainable, lightweight material so it can be easily transported and erected in a short time to quickly produce a look that has a highly visual impact. It is then just as easily packed up and stored away.

Utilising materials such as cardboard rolls and chipboard teamed with fabric ensure a low carbon footprint. The manufacture is equally simple and sustainable, right down to the energy-saving lightbulbs that illuminate the jewel-like ice-cream cups (from cinemas) that dangle alluringly from open plastic shades. The patterning on the lampshades reflects the detail of the Gauteng Tourism logo, a theme that was specifically nudged into the traditional local fabric design to reinforce the brand.

A unique and memorable stand from a unique and memorable designer, this is classic “Nicholas”.
