Dancing across Johannesburg
In 1989 two journalists approached a sponsor with a revolutionary proposal. They envisioned a South African contemporary dance festival.
Taken in by the pair’s passion for contemporary choreography and dance, Vita Promotions agreed to facilitate the event. That same year Dance Umbrella was launched. The festival featured eight contemporary dance productions.
Today it is thanks to Marilyn Jenkins and Adrienne Sichel that Dance Umbrella lives.
Now in its 24th year, the contemporary dance celebration has grown considerably since its humble beginnings.
Dance Umbrella 2012, which is currently underway at venues across Johannesburg, boasts a record 22 South African entries. The 15-day dance expression also features work by invited international companies and includes a series of practical workshops and masterclasses.
Dance Umbrella 2012 runs till 4 March 4 at the Market Theatre complex, Wits Theatre, the Dance Factory, the Goodman Gallery at Goethe on Main and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
