Gauteng cannot boast a coastline, but there’s still plenty of fishing in the province at these top three fishing venues.

Footloose Trout Farm off William Nicol Drive offers conventional fishing and fly-fishing at a gorgeous venue. The farm boasts 13 dams, each stocked with trout, bass, barbell and carp, but you can only take home the trout as the rest are “catch and release”. You can rent a rod or bring your own.

Trout costs R90/kg, and Footloose staff are on hand to gut, clean and vacuum-pack your catch.

This spectacular 10ha venue is not just a farm for fishermen but also a superb venue for parties, lunches and a great day outdoors for the kids.

Visit the Footloose website (links to http://www.footloosetroutfarm.co.za/) for more details.

Barbus Haven Fly-fishing in Magaliesburg is an intimate venue that offers a variety of fishing options for a small group of fishing fanatics.

Trout/bass and vlei kurper are on offer in the dam on a catch-and-release basis. The facility also boasts 8.5km of Magalies River for small stream fly-fishing for bass, carp, barbell and large- and small-scale yellows. Guests are accompanied by a trained river/fly-fishing guide and tuition is offered to refine your skills for small-stream fishing.

Fly-fishing equipment is available for hire and the most effective fly patterns can be bought. Make sure you book your place as the venue only opens for about eight people per day.

Brookwood Estate Trout Farm in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site is an idyllic retreat for the discerning fisherman. The farm offers five dams, three of which are only for fly-fisherman (all well stocked with huge rainbow trout, bass, yellows, carp, barbell and bream), and superb yellowfish in the Blaauwbank River.

The facility offers rod hire, and is open every day, with a quiet night fish event on the third Wednesday of every month.

The tackle shop stocks almost everything you need and, for those who want to stay over, chalets are available.
