My province in pictures: Reflecting on the past at Constitution Hill

Besides being a site of historical significance, Constitution Hill in Parktown also has some of the best views of Jo’burg. After a typical afternoon storm, I love to drive up there and walk around the precinct. My favourite section is the walk around the Old Fort Prison that was built in 1893. From the prison wall Braamfontein and the CBD in the background can be seen in incredible detail.

The mousebird, or muisvoel in Afrikaans, is only found in sub-Saharan Africa. The species gets its name from how they scurry inbetween branches and how sociable they are, the birds are often found in bands of about 20.

Dragons, fireworks and Chinese lanterns were the order of the day in Cyrildene on Saturday as hundreds of locals took to the streets to celebrate Chinese New Year.

The start of the Year of the Water Dragon, festivities began at Nan Hua Temple in Bronkhorstspruit on January 23 and made their way across the province – ending in Derrick Avenue.
