Gauteng residents and visitors are in for a treat this week when Africa Day celebrations kick off in Johannesburg’s Maboneng Precinct.

Although traditionally fêted on 25 May, this year’s Africa Day merriments will run from 19 to 26 May in Main Street and include music events, dance performances, drumming ensembles, art and craft exhibitions and food fairs.

Sumptuous food, adventure quads, four-star luxury rooms, touring on mountain bikes, historic tales, exquisite art, marsh owls, great entertainment and birding picnics. Where am I?

Very few people would believe in Gauteng’s sprawling township of Soweto but, thanks to a small group of budding entrepreneurs, that’s all changing.

“It will be nice to win,” says Salome Tshungu from Orchards Executive Accommodation in Midrand. “But the Eteya awards have shown me that it’s no longer about me, it’s about selling small business in Gauteng.”

Gauteng Tourism announced the trade launch of the Dinokeng Game Reserve (DGR) at Africa’s largest travel trade show, Tourism Indaba. The event was celebrated at the Gauteng Tourism stand at Indaba on 12 May 2012 and attended by key members of the tourism industry.
