Very few people would believe in Gauteng’s sprawling township of Soweto but, thanks to a small group of budding entrepreneurs, that’s all changing.

The Gauteng Tourism Authority wowed Indaba attendees with its amazing stand design this year. A tall passage of cardboard rolls supports a series of new-age chandeliers in a look that has inspired many to linger and enjoy its carefully designed details.

The gorgeous design and green thinking behind the stand won Gauteng Tourism a Platinum award at the Indaba stand awards in the destination marketing category. Platinum is the apex award – there is none higher or more coveted.

The City of Tshwane is the biggest metropolis in South Africa and the third-largest city in world. It is home to 132 embassies and four universities.

At a ceremony hosted at the Hilton Hotel Polo Club in KwaZulu-Natal last night, deputy city manager Lindiwe Kwele unveiled the new City of Tshwane logo and spoke about catalytic projects that will see the revamping of South Africa’s administrative capital.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was such a legend in his own lifetime that he was given the title Mahatma, meaning “great soul”. He united people of different races and religions, but most of all he united people in colonised countries in developing “satyagraha”, a form of resistance that was both ethical and effective.

The struggle for democracy was fought throughout the country, but no province has the concentration of significant sites to compete with Gauteng. 

No one who claims to have an interest in the history of democracy should visit Gauteng without paying a visit to some of the deeply historically significant places in the province.
