Ten days before its public opening, the new Wits Art Museum came alive as treasures from all over the country and the continent were admired by guests milling about the museum’s various floors.

The Seeing Stars Exhibition, which will open to the public on May 19, features photographs, mixed medium works, sculptures and tribal art. Highlights include the bold charcoal of William Kentridge and the thickly layered oil paint of Penny Siopis, as well as ceremonial cloths hanging on the walls and masks from Nigeria.

In honour of International Museums Day on 18 May, we have searched Gauteng for the most exciting museum and exhibition experiences.

Maropeng in the Cradle of Humankind is an area immensely wealthy in archaeological significance, and the Maropeng Visitor Centre is a fascinating place to visit. Another section of the Maropeng area, Swartkrans is one of the Cradle’s richest fossil sites, and is usually closed to the public, but on Saturday 19 May there will be a guided walking tour of the active palaeontological dig.
