Lying directly between Johannesburg’s historic city centre and the newer Sandton business district and with a Gautrain station right on its doorstep, the Rosebank Precinct is one of the most popular places to be in Johannesburg for business and leisure. An easily walkable area with a wide choice of hotels and restaurants, at the centre of Rosebank is the large Rosebank Mall, one of Johannesburg’s leading shopping destinations.
Completely refurbished and redesigned in 2014, the modern and bright Rosebank Mall boasts over 160 shops spread over four storeys of retail heaven. All the biggest high street retailers such as Edgars, Woolworths, River Island and Mr Price are here, as well as smaller independent local brands like iwasshot in joburg :), who make the coolest notepads, phone covers and coasters printed with photos of urban Joburg.
There are plenty of places to stop for coffee as you shop including Europa, Woolworths Cafe, Mugg & Bean and a particularly stylish branch of the bookstore chain Exclusive Books, which has its own coffee shop. Other attractions include two large supermarkets, a Planet Fitness gym, a post office, hairdressers and beauty salons and a branch of Ster Kinekor’s Cinema Nouveau which specialises in arthouse and foreign films.
Adjoining the mall is the Rosebank Art and Craft Market (open daily), which is among the best places in Gauteng to buy South African crafts. A wonderland of African craftsmanship here you can find stalls selling everything from beaded sculptures, jewellery, West African masks and traditional fabrics to classic souvenirs such as magnets, keyrings and T-shirts. On Sundays there is also the huge Rosebank Sunday Market on the roof of the Rosebank Mall with live entertainment, food and craft stalls, clothing and vintage bric-a-brac.
