Action & Adventure Attractions
Overview
A superb variety of action-packed experiences coupled with diverse terrain and an ideal climate make Gauteng a mecca for adrenaline seekers.
For those who intend to make the most of their stay in Gauteng, dedicated operators offer world-class climbing, hiking and walking routes, mountain biking and cycle tours, paragliding, parachuting, skydiving and bungee jumping in all corners of the province – and just about any other extreme adventure you can think of.
Visitors who enjoy rock climbing are in for a treat – and those who haven’t abseiled before have an opportunity to descend some of Gauteng’s most iconic buildings, including Ponte, Soweto’s Orlando Towers and others in Johannesburg. You can also rap jump - abseil with the ropes attached to your back instead of your front, so you descend facing the ground, and at a run if you’re in a hurry.
Purerush Industries in Johannesburg offers rap jumping at the massive Orlando Towers, freeboarding that they compare to snowboarding on the street, as well as street luge and butt boarding, and mountain boarding and sandboarding on Gauteng’s famed mine dumps.
Wild Cave Adventures is based in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage area, and offers a tantalising mix of options that include abseiling, caving, rock climbing, mountaineering, wild caving, trekking, kloofing, and teambuilding.
Living on the Edge Adventures hosts Bungee Mogale off the Kings Kloof Bridge in Mogale City (Krugersdorp). Anyone weighing between 40kg and 120kg can jump, but no tandem jumps are allowed. The height of the jump is almost 50m.
At the Orlando Towers vertical adventure centre in Soweto, bungee jumping, climbing, abseiling, rap jumping, and swinging are on offer.
The Vaal River, a tributary of the Orange River, is very close to Johannesburg and is a popular destination for those looking to take on some easy rapids. A very pleasant day enjoying small and mildly challenging rapids can also be enjoyed on the Crocodile River.
For those looking to hike one of Gauteng’s scenic trails, meet up with any of the following hiking clubs:
The Boksburg Hiking Club
Johannesburg Hiking Club
Pretoria Dapper Stapper Klub/Club
If you’re comfortable on a horse, The Danielsrust Horse Trails offers riding in the Kromdraai Conservancy, 40km from Johannesburg, across some of the last remaining big farms in Gauteng. On the trails you can view more than 700 head of game; you can also ride through the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, and to the spectacular Wonder Cave.
Gauteng is particularly popular with mountain bike lovers, and the province’s superb weather allows for cycling at any time of the year, all day and just about every day.
The Johannesburg Mountain Biking Club holds rides of different length, difficulty and technical challenge that visitors can join at a cost of R20.
For skydivers the sky is the limit on most Sundays at various locations around the city. Pretoria Skydiving Club, the biggest of its kind in South Africa, is your best bet if you’re inland. It flies two Pilatus Porters, making 20-way formations a real possibility.
For climbers, Gauteng hosts the The Climbing Barn just outside Tshwane. It features more than 450m² of climbing wall and in excess of 100m² of bouldering.
Wonderwall in Johannesburg is an indoor climbing venue that features 500m² of climbing walls, as well as a 3m-high bouldering cave. It caters to everyone, from beginners to veterans, and gear is available for rental.
