Are you a daredevil? Are you at your happiest when adrenalin is rushing through your veins and the wind’s in your hair? If so then a day at the Johannesburg Skydiving Club in Carletonville, west Gauteng, may be the thing for you.
The club, which caters for experienced skydivers and beginners, specialises in tandem jumps. After a short training session, you’ll be hooked up to an instructor with a special yoke. While the instructor does all the work, you’ll be able to enjoy the ride and experience a smooth freefall.
Skydivers on the tandem jump are released from the PAC 750 XL plane about 3.3km (about 10 800ft) above the ground, from where they freefall for about 40 seconds at 200km/h before the instructor opens the parachute.
Should you like a record of the adrenalin-filled activity, you can choose to have your entire jump – including a close-up of the freefall and landing – filmed and edited, and burnt onto a DVD that is available 45 minutes after landing.
The Johannesburg Skydiving Club goes to great lengths to ensure that the whole family enjoys a day’s outing at its airfield. The airfield has six braai facilities, a canteen that provides soft drinks and food, and a licensed bar (strictly for non-jumpers and post-jump celebrations).
Please note that those under the age of 21 need permission from their parents or guardians to take part in the tandem jump, and the jump has a weight limit of 95kg. Children over the age of six can do the tandem skydive, depending on their state of readiness. Jumpers will be provided with a jump suit, but should wear flat-soled lace up shoes with no hooks and comfortable clothing. Contact lenses and spectacles are not a problem; the club provides goggles.
