Themed around the late 19th Century Johannesburg gold rush, Gold Reef City is an entertainment complex that comprises a theme park, casino, hotel and entertainment centre. History, adventure and entertainment all come together at the complex, which is situated on the edge of one of the city’s oldest gold mines, located 8km from the Johannesburg Central Business District and 20 minutes drive from O.R Tambo International Airport.
The Gold Reef City theme park has some of the biggest and scariest rollercoasters in Africa. The most hair-raising is the Tower of Terror that has a 50metre drop and speeds of 100km per hour and is rated with a ‘fear factor’ of 10 out of 10. Another thrilling ride is the Anaconda which is built in the shape of an anaconda snake and is an inverted corkscrew rollercoaster with a fear factor of 9 out of 10.
The theme park is a popular place for a family day out and there are rides for all ages including the Fun Train, Giant Wheel, Lazy Boats, Log Ride, and Wave Swing, rides for smaller kids include the Dragon Ride, Balloon Wheel and Carousel. The theme park also includes a fun recreation of an old 19th Century mining village, where you can step back in time to the heady days of the Johannesburg gold rush.

The casino at Gold Reef City is open 24 hours a days and has 1,700 slot machines and 50 gaming tables, a spacious lounge area and an exclusive Salon Privé gaming lounge reserved for high rollers.
Gold Reef City has a variety of entertainment facilities including restaurants, cafes and bars as well as the 1,100 seat Lyric Theatre, which is frequently used for major concerts, comedy shows and dance productions. There is also a six-screen cinema, which has been stylishly redesigned to emulate an old-fashioned picture house, a games arcade with a twelve-lane ten-pin bowling alley and the Kiddies Express crèche.
