Gillooly’s Farm is one of the best places to visit in Johannesburg when you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, to just enjoy the tranquility of the countryside on your doorstep.
The owner, James Gillooly, sold the farm to the city council in 1944 and it was named after him. Situated in the east of Johannesburg, in Bedfordview, it is a 44-hectare piece of land that is famous for its walking trails, birds and recreational areas, giving families choices when looking for outdoor things to do in Gauteng. There is also a restaurant at Gillooly’s Farm.
With more than 50 bird species including White-breasted Cormorant, Reed Cormorant, African Darter, Grey Heron, Cattle Egret, White Stork, Egyptian Goose, Yellow-billed Duck, House Sparrow and Cape Wagtail, Gillooly’s Farm is a must-see for bird lovers and aspiring bird watchers.
There is also a large human-made lake, which is home to a number of fish species like the Common Carp, Blue Kurper and Sharptooth Catfish (Barbel).
On a sunny day families can enjoy a braai or a picnic around the dam with plenty of places to relax and watch the birdlife, while the kids play.
