Zoo Lake
Located off Jan Smuts Avenue across the road from the Johannesburg Zoo, Zoo Lake park offers one of the city’s best daytime picnic spots. Here an assortment of activities awaits visitors of every age, who can enjoy a relaxed outdoor environment with the option of paddling across the man-made lake. During weekends and public holidays the park attracts its largest crowds, lured by the open space and dappled sunshine.

For a leisurely walk or family picnic, look no further than this outdoor venue set in an urban venue.
The budding trees make spring at Zoo Lake a sight to behold for joggers, dog walkers and romantic couples. The lush vegetation and open spaces ensure there is no shortage of room for braais or picnics. Sports enthusiasts are also catered for – a number of amateur soccer tournaments are played at the venue.
The Zoo Lake Bowling Club is a favourite hang-out for those wanting to engage in a round of bowls or a round of drinks.
There are also plenty of activities for children. Alongside the lake they can feed the ducks, or take them rowing in one of the brightly coloured boats for hire. Those who enjoy tennis can play a game or two at the courts near the north end of the park, while those who favour a spot of authentic local cuisine can stop for a bite at Moyo’s restaurant, located on the bank of the lake. It serves sumptuous African cuisine with stylish flair. From Oxtail Amos to Moyo Fillet Medallions, there’s something on the menu for everyone.
Over the years Zoo Lake has developed a reputation as a popular concert venue. One of the biggest annual events hosted there is the Jazz on the Lake concert in early September, when enthusiastic Johannesburg residents bid farewell to the winter cold and welcome spring in song and dance.
