Thokoza Park is a popular outdoor recreational area in Rockville, Soweto. Within the park’s lush grounds you’ll find Soweto’s first fountain and the Moroka Dam, named after apartheid struggle icon Dr James Moroka.

The park is a favourite spot for family picnics and braais (barbeques). On weekends, it’s a vibrant setting: people jostle for space around the braais or lounge in the shade, children have great fun feeding the ducks on the dam or enjoying the playground, and basketball and netball courts keep the sports fans engaged. The scenic surrounds also make the park a popular backdrop for wedding photos, and wedding parties are a familiar sight on weekends.

During big sporting events, visitors can enjoy the action on the big-screen television in the middle of the park. Art exhibitions and music events are also popular at the park.

Thokoza Park is situated in the heart of Soweto – it’s just down the road from the busy Maponya Mall and near the renowned Regina Mundi Church, a site of resistance during apartheid and place of shelter during the 1976 Soweto Uprising. It’s an ideal space for those looking to spend an afternoon soaking up the sun and township beat.
