The Sci-Bono Discovery Centre aims to create an awareness and interest in the world of maths, science and technology in school learners and further iterate the important role that modern science and technology plays in the world. Located in the old Electric Workshop in Newtown, the centre is perfectly positioned to align its projects with other attractions in Newtown.

The centre offers a wide range of activities and learning programmes to school learners and teachers in order to support learning in maths, science and technology and to promote career education in these areas of economy. It is the largest science centre in Southern Africa and offers more than 300 world-class science exhibits, which are all interactive and contemporary. The centre also has a teacher academy that offers in-service training, ICT training, teacher-into-industry training and a relief teacher programme.

The edutainment centre was initiated by the Gauteng Department of Education and private sector companies, including Murray & Roberts, Sentach, IBM and BMW, among others. Some programmes offered by the centre are aimed at disadvantaged schools in remote areas. These outreach programmes have introduced computer-aided design (CAD) and industrial design in 79 public schools through the DESIGNation programme; offered a team of science teachers and a mobile laboratory to teach science and chemistry in 30 schools through the Emasondosondo Project; and developed and distributed lesson plans and classroom resources to support the new curriculum in public schools.

The Sci-Bono Discovery Centre is also used as a venue for conferences, launches, exhibitions and kids’ parties.
