Sandton City
Sandton City is the four-storey cosmopolitan shopping centre situated in Africa’s “richest mile” – the upmarket Sandton central business district in northern Johannesburg. With more than 300 leading local and international brands on sale in the centre’s stores, Sandton City has become Gauteng’s “it” shopping destination. When its doors opened in 1973, the centre offered 50 000 metres squared of mall space; when renovations are completed in late 2011, it will boast a total retail, office and hotel space of 215 000 metres squared.
Sandton City’s food court offers visitors a range of restaurants, coffee shops and fast food outlets, while the rest of the mall offers additional dining options for those looking to sit down to a fine dining experience or grab something on the go. Other entertainment options include the mall’s 11-screen cinema complex.
Information kiosks throughout the centre provide customer information and services. The information kiosks are open from 09h00 to 18h00 on Mondays to Saturdays, and 10h00 to 16h00 on Sundays. Directory boards and signage can be found throughout the centre.
Sandton City provides its customers with a wide variety of services, including gift vouchers, store directories, wheelchairs, toilet facilities for disabled shoppers and unisex baby changing rooms. A Muslim prayer room is located on the lower level. Its parking is accessible, safe and secure, and the parking bays are easily accessed from all major surrounding roads.
A quick walk through Sandton City will take visitors to Nelson Mandela Square, home of the iconic 6m bronze statue of Nelson Mandela. The square, complete with central fountain, is bordered by fine dining restaurants and sidewalk cafés. Exclusive shops offer visitors a wealth of choice, from gadgets to designer gear, and the 200-seater Old Mutual Theatre on the Square is a popular attraction.
Sandton Library is situated on Nelson Mandela Square, opposite the statue of Nelson Mandela. The library has a collection of more than 92 000 books, as well as audio books, videos, music CDs and language tapes, the local daily and weekly newspapers, periodicals and the provincial national and government Gazettes.
