The Origins Centre museum provides intriguing insight into the origins of humankind and human development. If you are fascinated by the theory of evolution, then this centre, attached to Wits University in Johannesburg, is a must-see.

Opened in 2006, the centre exhibits Africa’s unique heritage and culture through rock art paintings collected from all over Southern Africa dating back thousands of years.

Although the study of this human cultural tendency includes rock paintings from the Southern African region, the rock art investigation at the centre has an extensive focus on the San tribe. The San were expert hunter-gatherers and the first inhabitants of the Kalahari Desert. Their supposedly primitive way of life is examined in a range of fascinating films, displays and other commentary.

Visitors to the centre can also view an extensive collection of rock art from the Wits Art Research Institute. The rock paintings on display take you on an extraordinary journey of discovery, from the origins of humankind in Africa. Visitors to the centre also get to learn about the development of the rock art, symbolism and technology on the continent.
