The Origins Centre is a museum which provides an intriguing insight into the origins of mankind and human development. If you are fascinated by the theory of evolution, then this centre, attached to Wits University in Johannesburg, is a must visit for you.

The Maropeng Shop at the Origins Centre.

Opened in 2006, the Origins Centre provides you with a unique experience of Africa’s heritage and culture through rock art paintings collected from all over southern Africa dating back thousands of years. A closer look and study of the paintings will give you an understanding of the culture of the people who painted the rock art.

Visitors to the centre will also view an extensive collection of rock art from the Wits Art Research Institute. The rock paintings on display take you on an extraordinary journey of discovery, from the origins of humankind in Africa.

Visitors to the centre get to learn about the development of the rock art, symbolism and technology on the continent. Although the study of this human cultural tendency includes rock paintings from the southern African region, the rock art investigation at the Origins Centre has an extensive focus on the San tribe.

The San were expert hunter-gatherers and the first inhabitants of the Kalahari Desert. Their supposedly primitive way of life is examined in a range of fascinating films, displays and other commentary.
