Located within the vicinity of the Mandela Family Museum and Hector Pieterson Memorial in Vilakazi Street, Orlando West, Soweto, Nambitha offers a superb selection of local and traditional cuisine.

Meaning “to taste” in isiXhosa, Nambitha’s signature dishes and friendly service have kept local and international visitors coming back for seconds since it opened its doors in 1999.

The brainchild of South African entrepreneur Khulani Vilakazi, this restaurant is a culmination of his dreams to represent the vibrant and rich Sowetan culture. He set out to turn his dream into reality by building a restaurant where delectable dishes from South Africa’s various ethnic groups would be masterly presented amid story-telling photographs.

His dream fast became a reality; today at Nambitha, local cuisine such as Sticky Wings or the rump steak (served with chips, mash potatoes or pap and your choice of sauce) are elegantly plated and served, while exhibitions of classic photographs by world-acclaimed photographers such as Peter Magubane and Jurgen Schadeberg tell the tale of Soweto’s history.

Here ordinary Sowetans, tourists, business executives and local celebrities sit under one roof to enjoy wonderful meals that start from R25.

Traditional South African favourites, such as mogodu (tripe), pap (thick porridge) and umngqusho (samp and beans) are served throughout the day.

Guests can nurse their hangover or just enjoy breakfast township style by trying out the Englishman in Soweto breakfast and ekasi omelette or uphuthu. Those who are less adventurous when it comes to the palate have the option of sticking to the usual alfresco menu of mutton, marinated chicken, spare ribs, steak, oxtail, hamburgers, tramezzini, toasted sandwiches and other dishes at very affordable prices.
