From its humble beginnings as a minor rural airport 30 years ago, Lanseria International Airport has grown in stature to become a major 21st-century role player in the South African aviation industry.

In 1972, two Pretoria-based pilots, Fanie Haacke and Abe Sher, founded Lanseria Airport. Two years later the then-minister of transport, Hannes Rall, officially opened the facility to air traffic. A Learjet (ZS-MTD) had the honour of being the first plane to land at Lanseria. In 1975 the airport was given the honour of hosting Air Africa International, a major international aerospace event.

A historical highpoint in May 1990 saw former South African president Nelson Mandela flown to Johannesburg via Lanseria following his release from prison. In 1991, Lanseria’s co-owners, the Roodepoort and Krugersdorp municipalities and the Transvaal Administrator, sold the airport via a tender process to a consortium of private investors.

Today Lanseria International operates kulula.com flights to Cape Town and Durban, and Mango flights to Cape Town. There are also international flights to Mozambique, and a host of charter services to and from its convenient location close to the business hub of Sandton, and less than 50km from the major cities of Johannesburg and Tshwane. Other destinations are in the pipeline.

A combination of easy road access, convenient parking facilities and efficient embarkation and disembarkation procedures has contributed to the growth of Lanseria as an alternative to the region’s larger OR Tambo International Airport.

Passenger services on offer include car hire, executive lounges, restaurants, transfers, Wi-Fi access, foreign exchange facilities and duty-free shopping. Domestic and international medical and mercy flights are available on request.

Air Traffic and Navigation Services Africa provides a safe and reliable 24-hour air traffic control service. Additional safety measures include full baggage screening and round-the-clock security control, permit office facilities and armed reaction. The airport is also fully compliant with Civil Aviation Authority and International Civil Aviation Organisation requirements. No temporary permits are issued at the terminal building and access to the apron is restricted to valid, accredited permit holders.

Such security standards have been maintained and, as such, the airport boasts an excellent safety record and has long enjoyed the support of the domestic business and leisure fraternities.

Mandatory government facilities such as immigration, border police, customs and health, nature conservation, agriculture, national intelligence and veterinary services are all represented at Lanseria. Extended facilities include scheduled and charter operators, aircraft sales, freight services, flight schools, and maintenance services.
