Kwa Mai Mai
On the eastern side of the Johannesburg central business district lies Kwa Mai Mai, a traditional medicine market on the corner of Berea and Anderson streets.
The market – said to be one of the oldest in the city – houses dozens of stalls, some of which are run by traditional healers who ply their trade by tending to the ills of those in need.
Visitors may encounter Sangomas (traditional healers) at the market, and will also see various animal parts, used as traditional medicine (or “muti”), at stalls. But there are also more conventional items on offer, including traditional clothing and accompaniments
Following suit with other areas of the inner city that have been earmarked for regeneration, the City of Johannesburg aims to attract more tourists to the market and improve trade through various upgrades.
The market has also become a home for families in the close community, ading to the unique character of the area.
