The Goodman Gallery, set in the Johannesburg suburb of Parkwood and with project space at the trendy Arts on Main complex in the inner city, showcases contemporary, provocative artworks that promote dialogue in Africa.

The gallery dates back to 1966, when founder Linda Givon created a space to support artists and encourage them to exhibit works that challenged the tenets of apartheid and fostered cultural exchange in a racially divided country. After South Africa’s democratic transition in 1994, the gallery shifted its focus to reflect the new dispensation, exhibiting work with local and global socio-political themes.

The Goodman Gallery has exhibited at the world’s premier art fair, Art Basel, as well as at Art Basel – Miami Beach, the Armory Show in New York, Paris Photo and the Joburg Art Fair.

When curator Liza Essers acquired the gallery in 2008, she launched a number of initiatives to foster local and international collaborative relationships. In October 2009, the gallery collaborated with Air de Paris, Galleria Continua, Galerie Krinzinger, Kamel Mennour, Galerie Almine Rech and Esther Schipper Berlin.

During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the Goodman Gallery, in collaboration with local galleries and cultural institutions, launched a series of exhibitions around Johannesburg. These showcased the works of emerging and established African and international artists in the form of performances, screenings and installations in public spaces across Johannesburg.
