Flea markets have become an integral part of the South African shopping experience. They are no longer quirky spots selling tie-dyed, second-hand clothing, but have been transformed into vibrant alternatives to the conventional boutiques housed in glitzy shopping malls.

One of the largest such markets in Gauteng is Bruma Market World, set on the banks of Bruma Lake, near Eastgate Mall. The market, which was designed to resemble a small fishing village, is a good place to find genuine African arts and crafts.

The market is a “mini-African Union” – the 620-odd stalls showcase wares from almost every corner of the continent and reflect Africa’s diverse cultures. With a wealth of sculptures, handmade wares, curios and other souvenirs on offer at the market, visitors are bound to find something to suit their pockets.

Pick up handcrafted goods, wood crafts, curios, antiques and plastic gadgets, as well as steel and metal works. In addition to antiques and crafts, designer African clothing, electronics, textiles and quality furniture are readily available.

Bruma Market World has a string of fast-food outlets serving traditional African fare. Children are catered for at the Kids’ World playground, where they can engage in a variety of supervised entertainment while you trawl the market, and live bands and dancers perform for free at the market’s small arena.

If you’re in Gauteng and have time to spare, visit Bruma Market World – purchase some souvenirs, enjoy traditional music and fare, and experience the vibrancy of one of the country’s largest flea markets.
