44 Stanley Avenue
In a previous life, the buildings of 44 Stanley Avenue were Automobile Association garages, where cars that had had a run-in with Johannesburg’s roads came to get fixed. When the AA moved out, a few hundred squatters moved in and the buildings were subject to vandalism.
The decrepit buildings were “saved” by property developers several years ago, receiving a much-needed – and extensive – make-over that included rewiring and replumbing the site, as well as repairing damaged roofs, windows and doors.

Today, 44 Stanley Avenue is home to an eclectic mix of more than 25 chic boutiques, restaurants, cafés and studios. Despite the centre’s renovation, it still retains its “urban industrial” feel and historical charm.
Each of the centre’s shops stocks unique, one-of-a-kind items from South Africa and abroad – beautifully-crafted furniture, gorgeous clothing and rare books that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.
44 Stanley is also a foodie haven, boasting some of the most popular eateries in Jozi. An artisan bakery, a number of cafés and a handful of highly rated restaurants are located within the precinct.
Also worth a visit are the centre’s art galleries, design showroom and famed florist.
44 Stanley is especially popular with the city’s trendiest and most creative souls, but it also attracts those in search of an alternative to the Johannesburg’s mega-malls.
